Discussion on Opioid Addiction Prevention Feb. 27 at Sandburg

Sue Tisdale of the Human Service Center of Peoria will give an informational presentation on drug addiction prevention from 6:30-8 p.m. Feb. 27 in the Student Center on Carl Sandburg College’s Main Campus in Galesburg, 2400 Tom L. Wilson Blvd.

Tisdale, whose son Richard “Duney” Long died of an opioid overdose in 2015 at age 28, will discuss drug prevention, provide an overview of the opioid overdose antidote Narcan and supply Narcan kits. Tisdale will also have a table in the Student Center from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Feb. 27 in the Student Center to discuss those topics. Both are free and open to the public.

Tisdale’s goal is to educate and raise awareness about the science of opioid addiction; change the conversation about addiction to reduce language that prevents people from seeking treatment; connect communities and families struggling with substance use to available resources; and inform people about medical approaches to treatment.

More than 70,000 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States in 2017, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with Illinois seeing a 14.3 percent increase in drug overdose deaths from 2016 to 2017.
